SUMMARY:Performance Tiger TalesI at I.S. 187 The Christa Mcauliffe School
DESCRIPTION:Tiger Tales \nWritten by Kuang-Yu Fong\, Stephen Kaplin and Ron Sopyla \nDirected by Kuang-Yu Fong  and Stephen Kaplin                  \nDrawing on China’s two-thousand-year history of shadow puppetry\, Tiger Tales features an artful blend of Eastern and Western\, ancient and contemporary techniques that is the hallmark of all CTW productions.  It is a show that excites audiences of all ages and has been widely acclaimed and performed across America\, South Korea\, Taiwan and China\, notably at the 2005 First International Shadow Play Festival in Tangshan\, China\, where it won citations for Best Performance\, Best Short Plays\, and Best Voice-Over Narration. At the 2009 Shanghai International Puppet Festival\, Tiger Tales was honored with awards for Best Directing\, Best Puppet Design and Arts Innovation. Tiger Tales is performed in English accompanied by traditional Chinese music. \nBased on popular Chinese folktales and literature\, the story deals humorously with issues of power and survival of the small and powerless in the modern jungle\, in which the proverb\, “working for the emperor is as dangerous as working for the tiger” still holds true.  The stories are narrated by a wise old rabbit\, telling her granddaughter some of the adventures of her eventful life\, including her hair-raising encounters with Tiger\, the reigning King of the Jungle.   \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Two family-friendly performances at 1 PM and 3 PM to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit with Hao Bang-ah\, Rabbit!\, featuring traditional budaixi-style puppetry and live music. Both performances will be followed by hands-on workshops for children. \nLunar New Year\, the most important traditional festival in Asian cultures\, marks the start of a new year following the moon cycle. Each year is represented by one of twelve zodiac animals and 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit\, commencing January 22. The Rabbit is known to be the luckiest out of all twelve zodiac animals\, symbolizing such character traits as creativity\, compassion\, and sensitivity. \n“Hao Bang Ah!” is a common Chinese expression meaning “Great!” or “Well done!” \nEach year\, Chinese Theatre Works celebrates the Lunar New Year season with an original “budaixi\,” which is a traditional Chinese glove-puppet production that features the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. This year’s show stars the Rabbit\, who will preside over a jolly selection of wild puppet skits\, dances\, popular songs\, and well-known Chinese sayings that celebrate the wit and wisdom of the zodiac animals.
