SUMMARY:Tiger of Zhao
DESCRIPTION:The story “The Tiger of Zhao.” is based on a story found in Pu Song Ling’s 17th century classic collection of supernatural stories “Strange Tales from Make-Do Studio.”  The story is about a fierce tiger\, who kills and eats the son of an old woman who lives in the nearby forest. She complains to the local authorities of the injustice that Tiger caused her by depriving her of her one source of support and comfort. Out of pity for her\, they force the Tiger to take the place of her son\, to serve and provide for her. The Tiger does this faithfully for the rest of the woman’s life\, after which he too finds atonement and release.  The story is resonant with deep moral overtones\, touching on “tikkun” (Jewish term for making reparations for past misdeeds)\, healing injustice and overcoming fear and hatred\, and the need to understand the “other”- all timely themes for the current historical era.
